Texas softball delivered a statement win at the 2025 Women’s College World Series, defeating rival Oklahoma 4-2 at Devon Park in Oklahoma City. The victory not only ended a brutal 25-game losing streak for the Longhorns in the state of Oklahoma but also kept Texas unbeaten in the tournament and on pace for a second consecutive appearance in the WCWS championship series.
Sophomore ace Teagan Kavan starred on the mound with a complete-game performance, fending off a powerful Sooners lineup. Her clutch strikeouts in the final inning, including a game-ending K against power-hitter Gabbie Garcia, sealed the deal for Texas. Kavan allowed only two runs in the second inning and shut down Oklahoma the rest of the way, overcoming a challenging history against the Sooners.
Offensively, Texas came out swinging. The Longhorns plated two runs in the first inning using aggressive baserunning and timely sacrifice hitting. Center fielder Kayden Henry and third baseman Mia Scott executed a double-steal play to perfection, allowing Texas to take an early lead. Reese Atwood's sac fly made it 2-0 before Oklahoma responded with two runs of their own in the second frame.
The deadlock didn’t last long. In the fifth, Henry launched a solo shot off Oklahoma starter Sam Landry to give Texas the lead again. Then, in the sixth inning, Joley Mitchell extended the Longhorns' lead with her third home run in just two WCWS games, cementing her as one of the tournament’s top hitters.
Oklahoma threatened in the sixth with a runner reaching third, but Kavan kept her composure, retiring the side and maintaining Texas' lead. The win means Texas gets a day off before playing Monday against either Tennessee, UCLA, or Texas Tech, who are fighting through the other side of the bracket.
Oklahoma, meanwhile, drops into the loser’s bracket and faces elimination against Oregon. For Texas, this victory not only boosts morale but marks a turning point in the program's history, finally overcoming their Oklahoma hurdle on the biggest stage in college softball.
