Christa Pike Execution Stalls After Lethal Injection Fails

Christa Pike’s execution in Tennessee took an unexpected turn after the US Supreme Court cleared the state to proceed, only for officials to halt the lethal-injection process after it failed to produce the intended result. Pike, 50, remains alive, creating fresh legal and procedural questions over whether Tennessee can attempt another execution.

The Sixth Circuit had temporarily paused the execution so judges could review new claims, but the Supreme Court lifted that stay. Justices Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan and Ketanji Brown Jackson dissented from the decision. Pike’s attorneys argued that her original trial lawyers failed to fully present evidence of severe childhood abuse, neglect and trauma that might have influenced sentencing.

Governor Bill Lee had rejected Pike’s clemency request before the scheduled execution. Pike was sentenced to death for the 1995 murder of Colleen Slemmer and is Tennessee’s only woman on death row. Had the execution been completed, she would have been the first woman executed by the state in more than 200 years. Attention now turns to Tennessee’s lethal-injection protocol, Pike’s condition and possible new court challenges.
