THE FOLLOWING IS WHAT MAKES THIS A REAL UNRESTORED FACTORY BUILT SS 4-SPEED DUAL QUAD 409
The original 409 number emblems and their original speed nuts are still in place [ the reproduction 409 numbers are slightly different if you look close there is a very noticeable difference ] Along with all the other trim the side moldings still have their undisturbed original speed nuts still in place with the original trunk spatter paint sealing them in place, the cross flags, door handles inside & out, bumpers, plastic Chevy emblems, machine turned side and rear inserts, all the bright work on this car are the originals and show just the right amount of light ageing for a car that’s been in storage for many years and they also are in great shape especially the anodized aluminum it’s like new this is only possible with indoor out of the sunlight dry storage.
The fan shroud is a correct original 409 fan shroud not a reproduction.
This car has the original 3361s front carburetor and its original 3362s rear carburetor these are extremely rare.
Sporting the original 1962 only correctly date coded dual quad intake manifold September 11 1961
Original very rare 1s generation high nickel content [ to make them stronger ] aluminum t-10 with original linkage date coded correctly for this car only available on the 409 and still has the original shift ball [ the h pattern is there but worn off if you stick your nose in it you can still see it ]
The original 1962 tachometer sending unit is still there it was standard equipment on 409s only [ the original tach is gone ]
There is no shift indicator in the dash nor a shift lever mounting boss on the steering column and no neutral safety switch wired up and bypassed under the dash as you would have to do if this was a conversion from an automatic car. [ 409s only came in stick shifts in 1962 ] a conversion from an automatic would indicate a clone.
It has the correct 4-speed console shift plate and more importantly the correct mounting bracket & tunnel cover I removed the console to adjust the shift linkage an could see the original GM logo and the part number also showing just the right amount of age and pitting to be 55 years old and not a reproduction. And from underneath I could see the floor cutout for the shifter & the original tunnel cover. GM always cut them neat and way to big homemade cutouts are always sloppy and to small.
The bucket seats have the original mounting hardware correctly mounted and welded to the floor then sealed with the studs coming up from the bottom not going down from the top like a conversion from a bench seat would have. Indicating this is a real SS
I can visually see the original z-bar ball stud bracket welded to the frame with 55 years of dirt around it to me that means someone didn’t convert this to stick with reproduction parts.
Any old Chevy guys would remember this trick we all had to do this if we had a high performance 409 I had 27 of them. Those cars had a bad habit of tearing the rear upper control arm right off the chassis only the 409s could do this so we went to our local junk yard found a wrecked 62 to 64 X frame Chevy and cut the upper control arm off and welded it into our 409 giving it the added strength of having 2 upper control arms. This car has that modification and the welds with its surface rust appear to be 55 years old.
The 409 cars had a larger fuel line 3/8 instead of 5/16 and they were routed in a different lactation to try and keep them cool and yes they make reproductions of this fuel line but they don’t make them caked with 55 years of dirt and grease.
I was adjusting the valves recently and took photos of the head dates k2561 and k2761 November 25 & 27 1961 three weeks before the car was built 12c December third week 1961 this is exactly the correct time frame for parts manufacture then machining and then the cars assembly this is the very definition of what matching numbers means.
The valve covers are drippers correct for a 1962 solid lifter 409.
The dual quad black air cleaner is the original not a reproduction and in great condition another 1962 only item.
Distributor tag reads 1110919 that is a 1962 409 only item. Dated [1g7] [1 is 1961] [g is July] [7 is 7th day] July 7th 1961
The original extremely rare dual window distributor cap is still there. [ this part hasn’t been available for 40 years & not reproduced at the time I wrote this ]
Special deep grove pulleys on the engine & the very special spot welded deep grove pulley found only on 1962 - 409 generators it is extremely rare to see an original 409 generator still in place and working perfectly.
This car has the original heater bypass valve; solid lifter cars only had this, a mostly overlooked item even in high end restorations and always in clones.
The original glass bowl fuel filter is still in place a 409 only item and very rare to see one still there and not a reproduction.
The original 409 only ignition resistor and points and condenser distributor with its original wiring are still there in the correct location on the firewall
This car has the correct 3779553 all aluminum big block bell housing with original clutch linkage
Interior trim code 891 decodes as gold vinyl bucket seats they only came in true SS cars
