An opportunity for a deeper dive into the history of South Asian classical music and the basic foundations of the ancient art of the ragas, from one of its most dedicated practitioners, Alam Khan.
Alam Khan is a Professor of Indian Music At Cal Arts in Los Angeles, CA and the senior instructor at the famed Ali Akbar College of Music in San Rafael, CA, the oldest institution of Indian classical music in the United States, founded in 1968 by Alam’s late father, the great musician, Ali Akbar Khan. Alam, who studied sarod under his father in the guru-shishya tradition from age seven, is the direct heir to the legacy of the Senia Maihar gharana (school of learning in a style of music) which was established by his grandfather Baba Alauddin Khan in the 19th century in India. Alauddin Khan is a pillar of South Asian classical music in the 20th century and taught not only his son, Ali Akbar Khan, but also the great Ravi Shankar, Nikhil Bannerjee, and Aashish Khan as well.
