Jio Star: The New OTT Giant Set to Compete with Netflix and Amazon Prime Video

In a significant development within the OTT space, Disney Star India and Reliance Viacom are merging their operations, with the integration of Jio Cinema and Disney+ Hotstar being the latest major shift. This merger, which began earlier this year, is set to culminate with the launch of a new platform—Jio Star. The merging process, which is expected to complete by Wednesday, November 13, 2024, will see Jio Cinema being absorbed into Disney+ Hotstar, with the newly unified platform scheduled to go live on Thursday, November 14.

Jio Star, as the new platform will be called, is set to become a formidable player in the highly competitive OTT market, joining Netflix and Amazon Prime Video as one of the top three streaming services globally. The merger makes sense given Jio Cinema’s strong presence in India and Disney+ Hotstar's established user base and robust content library. The decision to dissolve Jio Cinema into Hotstar is also driven by the latter’s superior user interface and advanced technical infrastructure, which will likely offer a smoother experience for consumers.

Once Jio Star is live, users will have access to content from both Jio Cinema and Disney+ Hotstar on a single platform. This will give subscribers access to a vast library of films, TV shows, sports, and exclusive content from both services. The consolidation is poised to make Jio Star a powerful competitor to the likes of Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, which have long dominated the OTT market by securing the digital rights to high-profile films and shows.

With Reliance’s significant backing, Jio Star is expected to make aggressive moves in the OTT rights business, further intensifying the battle for exclusive digital content.
