Mohanlal Sets Record: 4 Releases in 8 Months
Veteran Malayalam actor Mohanlal is redefining stardom and senior-hero legacy in Indian cinema with an extraordinary featfour theatrical releases in just eight months of 2025. The “Complete Actor” has already scored big with Empuraan and Thudarum, and is now all set to release Hridayapoorvam during Onam this year. Additionally, he will also be seen in a cameo in the pan-Indian film Kannappa.
Starting off 2025 with Empuraan, the much-hyped sequel opened to mixed reviews but enjoyed a massive box office opening, particularly in Kerala. Despite the critical reception, Mohanlal’s charisma ensured the film remained a hot topic, reaffirming his stronghold on the Malayalam audience.
Following this came Thudarum, which turned out to be a game-changer. The film grossed over ₹100 crore in Kerala alone, setting a record as the first Malayalam film to achieve such a feat within the state. It also performed well across India and in its Telugu-dubbed version, proving Mohanlal's appeal beyond regional boundaries.
Now, Hridayapoorvam is poised to continue this successful streak. Directed by Sathyan Anthikad and written by Sonu T. P., based on a story by Anthikad’s son Akhil Sathyan, this family drama has completed filming and is scheduled to hit screens on August 28, 2025, right in time for Onam festivities. The buzz around the film is strong, and expectations are high for a feel-good entertainer from the trusted Anthikad-Mohanlal combination.
In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), Mohanlal confirmed that the shoot of Hridayapoorvam has wrapped up, creating ripples of excitement among fans and trade analysts. If the film manages to strike a chord at the box office, it would mean three consecutive hits for the actor in a single calendar year an unprecedented achievement for a senior hero in India’s film industry.
Mohanlal’s momentum doesn’t stop there. He is also appearing in a supporting role in the mythological epic Kannappa, which is expected to hit screens later this year. Though a brief role, it still adds to his list of releases and screen presence in 2025. Beyond these four, the actor is also juggling multiple major projects like Vrushabha, Ram, and an untitled Malayalam film, keeping him continuously in the spotlight.
While contemporaries like Mammootty have pulled off prolific years in the past, no other senior actor across South India or the country has maintained such a consistent, box-office-driven release schedule in recent times. Mohanlal’s dedication, passion for cinema, and versatile role choices are proof that age is no barrier to stardom especially when you’re driven by sheer love for the craft. With each film spanning a different genre and narrative tone, Mohanlal is not just breaking records, but also setting new benchmarks for productivity and popularity in Indian cinema.
