Adolescence Surpasses Stranger Things on Netflix
Netflix’s UK-based limited series Adolescence has broken into the record books by becoming the second most-watched English-language series in the streaming giant’s history. Surpassing Stranger Things Season 4, the coming-of-age drama racked up an impressive 141.2 million views within just 80 days of its global release on March 13, 2025. In contrast, Stranger Things 4 reached 140.7 million views over a 91-day period in 2022.
The series, praised for its emotional depth and gripping realism, chronicles the turbulent lives of teenagers facing societal pressures and personal crises. With authentic performances and a grounded narrative, Adolescence has captured the attention of viewers around the world. Its rapid climb in Netflix’s all-time rankings reflects a shift in audience preferences toward relatable, emotionally intense storytelling.
With its recent success, Adolescence is now only behind Wednesday in the English-language category, which logged 252.1 million views during its premiere window. Globally across all languages, Squid Game Season 1 remains Netflix’s biggest hit with 265.2 million views, followed by its sequel at 192.6 million.
Netflix’s weekly rankings for May 26 to June 1 further highlight the platform’s dynamic content performance. Sirens topped the chart with 18.2 million views, followed closely by Cold Case: The Tylenol Murders at 11.9 million views in just four days. Other standout titles include Dept. Q (6 million views), American Manhunt: Osama bin Laden (5.4 million), and Bet (2.9 million).
Despite the sci-fi legacy of Stranger Things, Adolescence shows that audiences are increasingly drawn to emotionally resonant, socially relevant dramas. Its rise signals a growing trend in streaming toward nuanced storytelling that reflects real-world experiences, especially among younger demographics. As Netflix continues to invest in globally appealing original content, Adolescence stands as a powerful example of how raw authenticity can outperform even the most iconic genre series in today’s evolving entertainment landscape.
