Sandeep Vanga Faces Criticism Over Social Media Behavior
Filmmaker Sandeep Reddy Vanga, best known for his controversial 2023 action-drama Animal, has found himself in the center of a renewed debate involving fellow filmmakers, lyricists, and critics. The spark was reignited when director Anurag Kashyap shared a reflective post on social media praising Vanga as a misunderstood and deeply honest filmmaker. Calling him “vulnerable” and “confrontable,” Kashyap attempted to highlight Vanga’s human side, separate from his on-screen work.
However, the post didn’t sit well with everyone. Director Neeraj Ghaywan quickly responded with a curt “cringe,” while lyricist and writer Varun Grover dismissed the sentiment altogether with a firm “No.” In a recent interview, Grover elaborated on his disapproval. He clarified that Kashyap was defending the filmmaker, not the film, and that distinction mattered.
Grover argued that there’s a difference between defending a piece of art and defending the artist, especially one who, in his words, has “behaved obnoxiously” online. Grover referred to Vanga’s history of online altercations, particularly an incident where Vanga allegedly dismissed Javed Akhtar’s writing ability in an arrogant tone.
Further shedding light on the aftermath, Grover said Kashyap called him immediately to understand the reason behind his reaction. During their conversation, Kashyap reportedly accepted Grover’s logic, acknowledging the critique and agreeing that it was more about the man’s public behavior than his cinematic output.
This unfolding episode has not only reopened the conversation about Animal and Vanga’s divisive style but also raised larger questions about the line between personal conduct and professional acclaim. The debate continues to stir reactions across the industry, hinting at the growing discomfort with how public figures behave off-screen and how much of that behavior the public and peers are willing to tolerate.
