Aamir Khan on Why ‘Thugs of Hindostan’ Failed

Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan has opened up about the failure of his 2018 film ‘Thugs of Hindostan,’ admitting that he knew the movie would flop weeks before its release. Despite his concerns, the film’s producer Aditya Chopra and director Vijay Krishna Acharya believed in the project and ignored Khan’s warnings. In a candid conversation on Zee Music Company’s YouTube channel, Khan explained that he never liked the film himself due to flaws in the script and structure.

Aamir revealed that from the early stages of the film, he felt the writing was weak and that the overall storytelling had major issues. For about eight months, he tried to convince the team to make changes, but both Chopra and Acharya were confident in their vision. Respecting their roles, Khan eventually accepted their decisions, though he remained unconvinced of the film’s potential success.

Interestingly, Khan said he didn’t feel the usual anxiety before the film’s release and was able to sleep peacefully, something his ex-wife Kirran Rao noticed. He attributed this calmness to the fact that he didn’t believe in the film’s quality and didn’t expect audiences to like it either. As expected, ‘Thugs of Hindostan’ failed to impress at the box office, confirming Khan’s early doubts.

Now, the actor is focused on his upcoming movie ‘Sitaare Zameen Par,’ where he plays a basketball coach training neurodivergent children. Directed by RS Prasanna and featuring Genelia D’Souza, the film is set to release on June 20, 2025. Fans are hopeful this heartfelt story will mark a strong comeback for the actor after the disappointment of ‘Thugs of Hindostan.’
