Rajinikanth's Coolie Title Changed for Hindi Release
Superstar Rajinikanth’s upcoming action drama Coolie, directed by pan-India sensation Lokesh Kanagaraj, is generating major buzz across India. The film, which marks a collaboration between the iconic actor and the filmmaker known for hits like Kaithi, Vikram, and Leo, is set for a grand release in multiple languages, including Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, and Hindi.
However, while the title Coolie has been finalized for most regional versions, the Hindi release is encountering a unique challenge. Reports indicate that the title Coolie may not be used for the Hindi version, as a film with the same name already exists in Bollywood the classic 1983 blockbuster starring Amitabh Bachchan. According to industry rules, a title cannot be reused for at least 10 years unless official clearance is obtained. As a result, the makers are considering renaming the Hindi version of the film to Mazdoor, which also reflects the same theme but avoids any legal complications.
Interest in the film’s Telugu theatrical rights is also heating up. Major production and distribution houses like Dil Raju, Sithara Naga Vamsi, Supriya Yarlagadda, and the Asian-Suresh group have expressed a strong desire to acquire distribution rights for the Telugu version. Insiders believe that Asian-Suresh and Sithara Naga Vamsi are close to securing the final deal.
Coolie has been positioned as a pan-India mass entertainer and Rajinikanth’s massive fan base in the Hindi-speaking belt makes the Hindi release crucial for its nationwide success. The decision to alter the title shows the team’s commitment to ensuring a smooth release without any delays or legal blocks.
Despite the title hiccup, anticipation for the film remains sky-high, especially with Lokesh Kanagaraj at the helm, known for his gripping narratives and stylish direction. The director’s recent films have not only received critical acclaim but have also performed phenomenally well at the box office, setting new benchmarks for Tamil and pan-Indian cinema.
The title change for the Hindi version is unlikely to affect the film’s hype or appeal. Instead, it reflects the production team's practical approach and readiness to adapt to market realities, ensuring Rajinikanth's charisma reaches every corner of the country.
