Aamir Khan Opens Up About Alcoholism and Depression After Divorce
Aamir Khan, known for his reserved nature when it comes to personal matters, recently opened up about one of the darkest periods of his life his 2002 divorce from Reena Dutta. In an emotional interview with India Today's sister channel, The Lallantop, Aamir candidly shared how the separation led him into a deep spiral of alcohol addiction and depression. Despite the public celebration of his success with the film Lagaan and being named 'Man of the Year,' Aamir revealed that he was struggling internally.
“I drank every day for a year and a half, trying to numb the pain. I didn’t sleep, I would lose consciousness from drinking,” he shared, admitting that he was in such a dark place that he even considered ending his life. Despite the immense emotional turmoil, the actor kept his pain hidden while working on Lagaan, which went on to become a milestone in Indian cinema.
Aamir and Reena’s relationship began in their youth when they were neighbors, and their love blossomed despite initial resistance. Aamir’s pursuit of Reena was famously intense, even writing her a letter in his own blood. They married secretly and had two children. However, after 16 years, their marriage ended in 2002, just a year after working together on Lagaan. Despite the separation, Aamir and Reena have maintained mutual respect and love for each other.
Aamir's personal life continued with his marriage to filmmaker Kiran Rao in 2005, with whom he shares a son, Azad. After their separation in 2021, Aamir found a new relationship with longtime friend Gauri Spratt. Despite the emotional struggles, Aamir has maintained close relationships with both his ex-wives and continues to co-parent his children. His emotional revelation about his battle with addiction and depression offers a raw glimpse into the challenges he faced, even as he achieved monumental professional success.
