Farhan Akhtar’s Manipuri Film Boong Chosen as Spotlight Film at Melbourne Festival 2025

Boong, a heartfelt Manipuri film backed by actor-filmmaker Farhan Akhtar, has earned the prestigious Spotlight Film slot at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) 2025. The film, set to make its Victorian premiere this August in Australia, has already captured global attention with its emotional storytelling and remarkable performances. Directed by debutant Lakshmipriya Devi and produced by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani under Excel Entertainment, Boong marks a promising new chapter for Manipuri cinema on the international stage.

The narrative unfolds in the scenic Manipur valley, centering on a young boy named Boong, played by Gugun Kipgen. Determined to reunite his family, Boong embarks on a tender journey to surprise his mother (Bala Hijam) by bringing back his long-absent father. What begins as an innocent mission turns into an emotional exploration filled with revelations and heartwarming moments.

Boong’s powerful storytelling has been recognized across multiple platforms. It won Best Feature Film at the International South Asian Film Festival in Canada, Best Youthful Film at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards in Australia, and the Audience Choice Award for Best Narrative Feature at The Indie Meme Film Festival. Director Lakshmipriya Devi also secured the Best Director award at the Bulbul Children’s International Film Festival in Goa, further solidifying her growing reputation as a visionary storyteller.

The selection of Boong as a Spotlight Film at IFFM highlights the rising prominence of Indian regional films in global cinema. With its cultural richness, universal themes, and emotional depth, Boong exemplifies how stories rooted in local traditions can resonate powerfully with international audiences.
