Vijay’s much-anticipated Tamil film Jana Nayagan has hit a major roadblock after the Madras High Court set aside a previous single judge order related to its censor certification. The ruling has resulted in further uncertainty around the film’s theatrical release, which was originally planned for January 9 ahead of the Pongal festival. Backed by KVN Productions, Jana Nayagan cannot be released in theatres until it receives clearance from the Central Board of Film Certification. The High Court observed that the single judge should have provided sufficient time for the Censor Board to file a counter before issuing directions, effectively nullifying the earlier relief granted to the makers.
The censor controversy surrounding Jana Nayagan began just days before its scheduled release, when the CBFC informed the producers that the film had been referred to a revising committee following a complaint. The production house subsequently approached the Madras High Court, which initially directed the Censor Board to issue a UA certificate once certain modifications were made. However, the CBFC challenged this order, leading a two-judge bench of the High Court to stay the directive and reopen the case. Although a verdict was expected on January 27, the latest development has pushed the process back to square one, with a fresh hearing now set to take place at the Madras High Court.
In an attempt to expedite the matter, KVN Productions moved the Supreme Court, seeking urgent intervention. However, the apex court declined to grant an expeditious hearing and directed the makers to pursue the case before the Madras High Court. This decision has left Jana Nayagan without a confirmed release date, much to the disappointment of fans. Directed by H Vinoth, the film is widely regarded as Vijay’s last cinematic outing before he transitions fully into politics. The ensemble cast includes Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Prakash Raj, Narain, and Priyamani. With legal proceedings still underway, all eyes are now on the High Court’s next hearing, which will determine when Jana Nayagan can finally reach audiences.
