Kerala Story 2 Release Halted by Court: Legal Concerns Over Distortion and Communal Harmony
The release of Kerala Story 2 has been unexpectedly halted, as the Kerala High Court granted an interim stay on the film's release. The movie, initially scheduled to hit theatres on February 27, 2026, now faces an indefinite delay following strong objections regarding its content and certification.
The bench, headed by Justice Bechu Kurian Thomas, expressed serious concerns about the certification process conducted by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). Petitioners had filed complaints arguing that the film could disturb communal harmony and misrepresent the state of Kerala, which is known for its secular identity and peaceful coexistence. The court raised questions about whether these elements were taken into account when approving the film.
One of the key points of contention was the use of "Kerala" in the movie title, which petitioners argued could lead to sweeping generalizations about the state and its people. The film’s claim to be inspired by real incidents was also flagged, as it could potentially stir social tensions or provoke unrest.
The court has called for a balance between creative freedom and public interest, with a focus on ensuring that films do not jeopardize communal peace. The case will be heard again soon as the court evaluates the situation further. For now, the release of Kerala Story 2 remains postponed until the legal proceedings reach a conclusion.
