Toy Story 5 opens big with $312 million global debut

Toy Story 5 sets 2026 box office record

Disney and Pixar’s Toy Story 5 has delivered a massive opening weekend, becoming the biggest domestic opener of 2026 so far. The animated sequel collected a reported $160 million from 4,425 theatres across North America, pushing it ahead of Universal’s Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which had opened with $131.7 million.

The film also created a new opening record for the Toy Story franchise, beating the $120 million start of Toy Story 4 in 2019. With this result, Toy Story 5 has proved that the long-running Pixar series still has strong pull among family audiences, children and nostalgic adult viewers.

Globally, the film opened with around $312 million, including $152 million from overseas markets. The figure places it among the strongest animated openings in box office history, behind Incredibles 2, which remains ahead with a $182.7 million domestic debut. The strong start is also a major boost for Disney and Pixar after years of mixed theatrical results for animated releases.

Woody, Buzz and Jessie face a new challenge

Directed by Pixar veteran Andrew Stanton, Toy Story 5 brings back popular characters Woody, Buzz Lightyear and Jessie, voiced by Tom Hanks, Tim Allen and Joan Cusack. The story follows the toys as Bonnie becomes increasingly attached to a new smart tablet called Lilypad, creating a fresh conflict between traditional play and digital distraction.

This theme gives the film a modern angle, especially for parents concerned about screen time and children’s changing habits. Instead of only depending on nostalgia, Toy Story 5 uses a familiar emotional setup to discuss how technology is changing childhood play.

Taylor Swift’s involvement has added another layer of attention to the film. The singer-songwriter contributed the end-credit song I Knew It, I Knew You and also performed it at the Los Angeles premiere. Her association has helped the movie reach both family audiences and music fans, giving the release wider pop culture appeal.

With strong reviews, an excellent audience response and a record opening weekend, Toy Story 5 now has a clear path for a long theatrical run. The coming weekdays will show whether the film can maintain momentum, but its opening has already made it one of the biggest Hollywood success stories of 2026.
