Supergirl Faces Box Office Trouble After Weak Opening

Supergirl Faces Box Office Trouble After Weak Opening

Supergirl struggles after weak global opening

Milly Alcock’s Supergirl has opened to a disappointing box office response, putting fresh pressure on DC Studios after the strong start of last year’s Superman. The film, which introduced Alcock as Kara Zor-El in a full-fledged lead role, was expected to build on the excitement created by the new DC Universe. Instead, early numbers suggest that the movie may find it difficult to recover its high production cost unless it shows a major turnaround in the coming weeks. Trade reports indicate that Supergirl collected around $38 million in North America and about $68 million worldwide during its opening weekend, far below initial expectations for a major superhero release. With a reported production budget of nearly $170 million, the film would need a much stronger global run to avoid heavy losses. Its India performance has also remained limited, despite release in English, Hindi and Tamil versions. After the first few days, the film managed only modest collections, showing that awareness and excitement around the character were not as strong as expected in the Indian market.

Did Superman’s success raise expectations too high?

One reason being discussed is the shadow of Superman. James Gunn’s Superman, starring David Corenswet, gave the rebooted DC Universe a strong start and created hope for connected superhero stories. Supergirl was positioned as the next important step because Kara Zor-El is closely linked to Superman’s mythology. However, the same connection may have raised expectations beyond what the film could deliver. Unlike Superman, Supergirl is still not a widely familiar character for many casual moviegoers, especially outside core comic-book fan circles. The film needed stronger promotion, clearer positioning and wider audience education before release. Mixed reviews, complaints about a predictable superhero template and a crowded release calendar have added to its challenges. With several major Hollywood releases arriving in July, Supergirl now faces a difficult road ahead. The coming days will decide whether the film can recover through word of mouth or whether it will be remembered as one of DC’s biggest box office setbacks.
