The Odyssey has delivered Christopher Nolan’s biggest opening weekend in India, earning an estimated ₹73.19 crore gross in its first three days. The strong start puts the epic in contention to challenge Oppenheimer’s ₹155 crore India record, although its weekday hold will determine the outcome.
The Odyssey Records Nolan’s Biggest India Opening
Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has begun its Indian theatrical run with exceptional momentum. The Matt Damon-led epic collected an estimated ₹61.30 crore net and ₹73.19 crore gross during its first three days, giving Nolan his biggest opening weekend in India.
The film opened with nearly ₹17.40 crore net on Friday, rose to around ₹22 crore on Saturday and maintained the pace with an estimated ₹21.90 crore on Sunday. The English version contributed the largest share of the business, underlining Nolan’s strong following in major cities.
The opening also surpassed Oppenheimer’s first-day performance. The Odyssey reportedly earned about ₹20.75 crore gross on Day 1, compared with Oppenheimer’s approximately ₹17.50 crore opening.
Can The Odyssey Beat Oppenheimer’s Record?
Oppenheimer remains Nolan’s highest-grossing film in India with an estimated lifetime gross of nearly ₹155 crore. The Odyssey must therefore add roughly ₹82 crore after its opening weekend to establish a new record.
Its early performance gives it a realistic chance, but the target is not guaranteed. Monday collections, weekday occupancy and the second weekend will reveal whether the film has enough sustained audience support to cross the ₹150 crore mark.
Premium formats could remain a major advantage. The film was shot entirely using IMAX cameras, while its global opening reached $264.1 million, including $124.5 million from the United States and Canada.
New Releases Could Reduce Screen Count
The Odyssey will face fresh competition when Vijay’s Jana Nayagan releases on July 23 and the Telugu romantic drama Chennai Love Story arrives on July 24. These films target different audience groups and may not directly compete with Nolan’s epic across every region.
However, major regional releases could reduce show counts, particularly in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Their impact will depend on advance bookings, theatre allocations and audience response.
Strong Word of Mouth May Extend Run
The film’s biggest advantage is Nolan’s reputation for theatrical spectacles and the response to its large-scale presentation. Matt Damon plays Odysseus in the adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek epic, supported by Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson and Charlize Theron.
If weekday collections remain steady and the second weekend records a healthy hold, The Odyssey could move closer to Oppenheimer’s benchmark. For now, it has delivered the strongest India opening of Nolan’s career.
