The Avengers: Doomsday trailer reveals Robert Downey Jr as Doctor Doom while Chris Evans, Thor, Black Panther and Cyclops return for a major MCU showdown.
Avengers: Doomsday Trailer Reveals Doctor Doom
Marvel Studios has released the full Avengers: Doomsday trailer, placing Robert Downey Jr’s Doctor Doom at the centre of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s next major conflict. The footage offers the clearest look yet at Downey’s transformation from Tony Stark, the hero who helped define the MCU, into Victor von Doom, a masked villain powerful enough to unite heroes from several worlds.
The trailer presents Doom as an immediate threat while Earth’s defenders struggle to prepare for the scale of the approaching battle. His arrival gives the film a powerful emotional twist because audiences closely associate Downey with Iron Man. Marvel previously confirmed that the actor would return in a new role as Doctor Doom rather than reprise Tony Stark.
Chris Evans Return Creates the Biggest Surprise
Chris Evans delivers the trailer’s most unexpected moment with his return as Steve Rogers. Thor appears stunned by the sight of the former Captain America, adding mystery to how Rogers has entered the unfolding multiverse crisis. A brief sequence involving Mjolnir further increases speculation about his role in the coming showdown.
Marvel had already announced the return of Steve Rogers through earlier promotional footage. The studio also released separate teasers highlighting Thor, the X-Men and Wakandan heroes before bringing the characters together for the larger campaign.
Avengers and X-Men Assemble for a Multiverse Battle
The trailer includes Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Letitia Wright as Shuri and James Marsden as Cyclops, signalling a crossover involving the Avengers, Wakandans and X-Men. Thor calls on the heroes to put aside their differences as they prepare for a battle that appears larger than any single team can handle.
The enormous ensemble is one of the film’s strongest attractions. Marvel’s announced cast features characters connected to the Avengers, Fantastic Four, X-Men, Wakanda and Thunderbolts storylines. Other confirmed actors include Vanessa Kirby, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Pedro Pascal, Florence Pugh, Tom Hiddleston, Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen.
The trailer uses these returning characters to establish Doom as an enemy capable of threatening several worlds. Downey’s transformation also creates a personal conflict for heroes who may recognise his resemblance to Tony Stark, although the exact connection between the two characters remains undisclosed.
Avengers: Doomsday Release Date and Creative Team
Avengers: Doomsday reunites Marvel Studios with directors Joe and Anthony Russo, who previously directed Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Their return has increased expectations for another large-scale story combining superhero reunions, emotional confrontations and major consequences for the wider MCU.
The film is scheduled to open exclusively in theatres on December 18, 2026. With Downey’s Doctor Doom, Evans’ Steve Rogers and heroes from several Marvel franchises sharing the screen, the trailer positions Avengers: Doomsday as the MCU’s next defining event.
