The makers of Om Chapter 1 revealed Mammootty’s character on his 75th birthday. Mammootty plays Burma Karthikeyan, a powerful smuggler with grey shades, in the Dhanush-led action thriller.

Malayalam superstar Mammootty has received a powerful character introduction as Burma Karthikeyan in Dhanush’s upcoming film Om – Chapter 1: Udhiram – The Blood Wood. The makers released the special character video on Mammootty’s 75th birthday, presenting him in a rugged and commanding avatar.

Burma Karthikeyan is also known as Siya, or “The Elder One.” Although the character operates as a smuggler, the video suggests he is not a conventional criminal. He appears to enjoy the respect of local people and even commands recognition from police officers, adding intrigue to his place in the story.

The reveal introduces Mammootty with mass-oriented visuals while carefully withholding details about his past, motives and connection to Dhanush’s character. The veteran actor’s presence has raised expectations around the scale and dramatic conflict of the Rajkumar Periasamy directorial.

The character video indicates that Burma Karthikeyan will combine authority, compassion and moral ambiguity. Siya describes himself as gold carrying small traces of copper, a comparison that hints at both admirable qualities and darker shades within his personality.

His influence appears to extend beyond the smuggling network, with the people around him viewing him as a protector rather than simply a feared underworld figure. This contrast could become an important part of the film’s narrative as his relationship with the lead character unfolds.

Om marks Mammootty’s return to Tamil cinema after seven years. His previous Tamil release was director Ram’s critically acclaimed Peranbu, which arrived in theatres in 2019. His comeback through a large-scale action thriller has therefore generated considerable interest among Tamil and Malayalam film audiences.

The film also reunites Mammootty and Dhanush on screen. Dhanush previously made a cameo appearance in Mammootty’s Malayalam comedy Proprietors: Kammath and Kammath.

Om – Chapter 1: Udhiram – The Blood Wood is written and directed by Rajkumar Periasamy, who previously delivered the successful biographical action drama Amaran. Dhanush plays the principal role, while the details of his character and his conflict with Burma Karthikeyan remain under wraps.

The ensemble cast includes Sai Pallavi, Sreeleela and Naseeruddin Shah. The project is especially significant for Naseeruddin Shah because it marks the acclaimed actor’s debut in Tamil cinema.

The title and its “Chapter 1” label suggest that the makers may be planning a larger story extending beyond a single film. The subtitle Udhiram – The Blood Wood and the earlier teaser’s images of social unrest indicate an intense action drama with political or societal themes.

Mammootty’s grey-shaded smuggler is expected to become one of the central forces driving this world, though the makers have not revealed whether he will be an ally, rival or morally complicated figure in Dhanush’s journey.

Along with playing the lead role, Dhanush is producing Om under his Wunderbar Studios banner. Shraddha Agrawal and Azmat Jagmag are also producing the film, while RTake Studios is associated with the project.

Sai Abhyankkar is composing the music, and Ezhil Arasu K is handling cinematography. The technical team includes editor R Kalaivanan and art director A Pannerselvam. Yannick Ben and Kecha Khamphakdee are overseeing the action sequences, indicating that the film will feature large and carefully designed set pieces.

The makers have not yet announced the movie’s confirmed theatrical release date. With Mammootty’s character now introduced, further updates about Dhanush’s role, the central conflict and the other cast members are expected in the coming months.
