Lyricist Ginny Diwan says Instagram reels helped Mirzapur song Vaaroon gain a new audience organically before its revival as Vaaroon Forever.

Some songs disappear after their initial release, while others return years later and connect with an entirely new group of listeners. Vaaroon, the soulful romantic song associated with Mirzapur, belongs to the second category.

Originally released in 2020, Vaaroon has experienced renewed popularity through Instagram reels and listener-created content. Its unexpected return has now led to Vaaroon Forever, a fresh rendition featured in Mirzapur: The Movie.

Lyricist Ginny Diwan said the song’s resurgence was driven by people who genuinely connected with it rather than by a planned marketing campaign. For the writer, its new popularity is a rewarding sign that emotionally rich lyrics can continue to find listeners long after their original release.

The original Vaaroon was composed by Anand Bhaskar, written by Ginny Diwan and sung by Romy. The new version reunites Diwan, Bhaskar and Romy, while celebrated playback singer Shreya Ghoshal joins the team for Vaaroon Forever.

The updated rendition has introduced the composition to viewers who may not have heard it during Mirzapur’s earlier run. Its revival also demonstrates how a song can acquire a second cultural life when audiences begin using it in short-form videos.

Vaaroon is especially distinctive because of its gentle romantic mood. The Mirzapur universe is primarily associated with crime, violence, revenge and power struggles. A tender love song appearing within that intense world created a striking emotional contrast and helped the track establish its own identity.

Diwan views the song’s renewed reception as recognition of the work invested in its words and emotions. She believes that when listeners connect with the feelings expressed in a song, it motivates writers to create more meaningful work.

According to Diwan, social media has fundamentally changed how audiences discover music. A song no longer needs to become a major hit immediately after release. Instagram reels can bring an older track back into circulation and expose it to listeners who missed it the first time.

She noted that Vaaroon’s fresh popularity was largely organic. The song was not reportedly supported by a major promotional push during its revival. Instead, listeners selected it for their videos, shared it and gradually helped it reach a wider audience.

This pattern has become increasingly important for the music industry. Short-form video platforms can extend a song’s lifespan, influence streaming numbers and encourage filmmakers to revisit compositions from older albums or franchises.

Vaaroon Forever is an example of that cycle. Audience affection revived interest in the original track, while the movie version has now created another opportunity for the song to connect with Mirzapur fans.

Diwan’s journey with the Mirzapur franchise began with Sajanwa Juganwa, a Bhojpuri-style song heard on the radio within the series. She later worked on other tracks, including Tittar Bittar.

While writing Tittar Bittar, Diwan wanted to ensure that the woman performing in the scene was not presented merely as an object. She approached the sequence from the performer’s perspective, giving the character control over how she communicates with and engages the people watching her.

The lyricist said women writers can bring their own emotional experiences and viewpoints to female characters. She also sees the present period as an encouraging one for women lyricists, with the industry increasingly discussing the need for greater representation.

As a member of the Screenwriters Association’s executive committee and lyric committee, Diwan has been part of conversations about opening more opportunities for female writers.

Diwan remains hopeful that audiences will once again embrace songs in which the lyrics carry as much importance as the melody. She recalled the emotional calm associated with older music and believes such compositions can return if filmmakers, composers and producers support them.

She stressed that creating a memorable song requires collaboration. A lyricist’s ideas can reach their full potential only when the composer understands the emotion, the director provides space for it and the producer supports its soul.

The renewed response to Vaaroon, along with interest in other Mirzapur: The Movie renditions such as Sanson Ki Mala, suggests that listeners still value emotionally resonant music. Vaaroon Forever now carries that legacy forward, connecting the original song’s tenderness with a new generation shaped by reels and digital discovery.
