Netflix has unveiled the first look of Unaccustomed Earth, its upcoming family drama starring Freida Pinto and Siddharth. Based on Jhumpa Lahiri’s acclaimed short-story collection of the same name, the series will begin streaming on December 17, 2026.
Adapted by writer and showrunner Madhuri Shekar, Unaccustomed Earth follows a multigenerational Indian American community living in Cambridge and Boston, Massachusetts. The narrative explores love, loss, family expectations, cultural identity and the search for belonging through interconnected relationships.
Freida Pinto plays Parul Chaudhury, a wife and mother who abandoned her college romance to respect her father’s wishes. After being diagnosed with cancer, Parul moves her family from India to Cambridge, the place she continues to consider home.
Faced with uncertainty, Parul decides to pursue the life she once sacrificed. Her choices begin affecting her husband, children and the wider immigrant community, creating emotional conflicts across generations. Siddharth appears as Amit, a man connected to Parul’s past and the decisions that could reshape her future.
Unaccustomed Earth cast brings together global talent
The ensemble cast includes Indraneil Sengupta as Jai, Parveen Kaur as Nina, Sarayu Blue as Ruma, Justin Bartha as Adam, Adi Roy as Kaushik, Iyla Sundarsingh Mckaig as Hema and Jayant Kripalani as Pranab.
Ishita Bansal plays Divya, while Meera Simham appears as Swati. Ravi Kapoor, Swayam Bhatia and Palomi Ghosh portray Vishal, Sudha and Anjali, respectively. The large ensemble reflects the show’s focus on several families and generations within the Indian American community.
Netflix series reunites acclaimed creative voices
Madhuri Shekar, known for 3 Body Problem and The Nevers, serves as the writer, showrunner and executive producer. The executive-production team also includes John Wells, Jhumpa Lahiri, Nisha Ganatra, Erica Saleh, Erin Jontow and Celia Costas.
The Lunchbox director Ritesh Batra has directed and executive produced the first two episodes. Produced by Warner Bros. Television, Unaccustomed Earth is positioned as an intimate family drama examining how love, illness, migration and unresolved choices can transform relationships. The series will premiere worldwide on Netflix on December 17, 2026.
