Ohh My Dog begins with an emotional tribute to Senapati, a brave police dog who was separated from her puppies. Her two sons, Oscar and Momo, grow up in completely different circumstances. Momo lives with young Apu and his loving family in Assam, while Oscar stays with Prince, a poor construction worker in Bihar.
Their lives suddenly change when Momo is kidnapped and Prince goes missing. The film then follows two parallel rescue missions: Apu sets out to find his beloved dog Momo, while Oscar follows his instincts and scent to track down Prince. Their journeys gradually expose a darker world involving animal trafficking, child labour, exploitation of poor workers and corruption.
Directed by Amit Rai, Ohh My Dog is an emotional adventure drama built around the bond between humans and animals. The film combines humour, social commentary and rescue-thriller elements while placing Oscar, the four-legged protagonist, at the centre of the story.
Despite its lengthy runtime and a few stereotypical characters, the movie works because of its emotional sincerity and Oscar's scene-stealing presence.
Oscar is unquestionably the biggest star of Ohh My Dog. The trained canine delivers several entertaining and emotional moments, particularly during the sequences where he tracks Prince through scent and confronts dangerous situations.
Maahi Rai makes a confident debut as Apu. He convincingly portrays a highly intelligent and tech-savvy child, although the writing occasionally makes the character appear overly arrogant.
Pankaj Tripathi brings warmth and sincerity to his role as the village master and adds emotional stability to the narrative.
Rajesh Kumar is impressive as the Bihari police officer. His accent, body language and performance blend naturally with the setting.
Pavan Malhotra delivers an energetic performance, but his character is written and performed at a consistently high volume that becomes repetitive after a point.
Nikhil Kumar and the supporting cast contribute effectively to the film's grounded atmosphere.
Amit Rai handles the emotional core effectively and gives the animal-human relationship enough space to connect with audiences. The parallel structure of a child searching for his pet and a dog searching for his owner provides the film with an engaging central hook.
The screenplay, however, becomes repetitive during the extended chase portions. Some stereotypes involving regional characters also feel unnecessary and could have been handled with greater subtlety.
The locations and supporting characters give the film a realistic texture, helping the social issues within the story feel more grounded.
The songs in Ohh My Dog do not leave a major impression. The soundtrack remains one of the weaker aspects of the film.
The background score is more effective, particularly during Oscar's rescue sequences and emotional moments, where it helps elevate the drama.
Editing is one of the film's major weaknesses. With a runtime of around two-and-a-half hours, the rescue journey becomes stretched and repetitive.
Several chase sequences could have been shortened without affecting the story. A tighter edit would have made Ohh My Dog more engaging and significantly improved its pace.
Ohh My Dog succeeds primarily because it understands the emotional connection audiences have with animals. Instead of treating Oscar merely as a supporting element, director Amit Rai turns him into the film's central hero.
The strongest idea in the screenplay is its parallel rescue structure. While Apu searches for Momo, Oscar desperately searches for Prince. This reversal gives the familiar missing-person narrative an interesting emotional dimension.
The film also attempts to address serious issues including illegal animal trafficking, child labour, exploitation of poor workers, organ rackets and corruption. These themes give the story additional weight, although the screenplay occasionally tries to cover too many subjects at once.
Oscar's investigative sequences provide some of the film's most enjoyable moments. Watching him follow scents, locate clues and confront criminals gives the movie an adventurous quality that should particularly appeal to children and animal lovers.
The supporting cast also strengthens the narrative. Pankaj Tripathi delivers his trademark warmth, while Rajesh Kumar stands out with an authentic performance. Maahi Rai shows confidence in his debut, though Apu's excessive intelligence and attitude sometimes feel exaggerated.
The biggest problem is the runtime. The rescue mission continues longer than necessary, reducing the tension that should have driven the second half. Certain stereotypes and loud characterisations further weaken otherwise emotional portions.
Despite these shortcomings, Ohh My Dog remains a heartfelt film. Oscar's charm, the emotional relationship between humans and their pets and several crowd-pleasing heroic moments ensure that the film retains its emotional appeal until the end.
