Sigma Movie Review: Jason Sanjay’s Directorial Debut Falls Short

Plot
Guru (Sundeep Kishan), desperate to save a library close to his late mother, loses ₹2 lakh at a gambling centre after allegedly being cheated. He then decides to take revenge on the management and attempts to extort money. His plan brings Sam (Faria Abdullah), Neil (Raju Sundaram) and others into the picture, leading to a crime-comedy heist.

Cast: Sundeep Kishan, Faria Abdullah, Raju Sundaram, Sampath Raj, Shiv Panditt, Anbu Thasan and others
Director: Jason Sanjay
Producer: Allirajah Subaskaran
Banner: Lyca Productions
Music: Thaman S

Overview
Jason Sanjay makes his directorial debut with Sigma, but the film struggles with outdated writing, weak execution and an inconsistent mix of crime, comedy, action and heist elements

Rating: ★⯪☆☆☆ (1.5/5)

Performances
Sundeep Kishan is effortless in his role, but the weak characterisation gives him little scope. Faria Abdullah and the supporting cast also fail to make much impact, while Sampath Raj appears out of place.

Technical Aspects
Thaman’s songs and background score are loud and largely forgettable. Krishnan Vasant’s cinematography is the film’s notable technical positive, with a few visually appealing frames and colour grading.

Positives

Sundeep Kishan’s performance A few good visuals Interesting premise

Negatives

Weak writing Poorly executed screenplay Outdated treatment Loud background score Excessive slow-motion shots Unnecessary item song

Analysis
Despite an interesting premise, Sigma fails to turn its crime-comedy and heist elements into engaging entertainment. The 2-hour-26-minute runtime feels lengthy, with neither the comedy nor the dramatic and action sequences making a strong impact. Jason Sanjay’s debut shows ambition, but the writing and direction lack the maturity required to sustain the film.

Bottomline: Forgettable
