Bollywood's Old Hits Return: Why Films Like 'Tumbbad' Are Back in Theatres

Bollywood's Old Hits Return: Why Films Like 'Tumbbad' Are Back in Theatres

Bollywood has recently seen a rising trend of re-releasing older films to fill the content gap amid a lull in new releases. This strategy aims to capitalize on nostalgia while giving previously overlooked films a second chance to shine. While some re-releases have found unexpected success, others have struggled to replicate their original impact at the box office. Trade experts have weighed in on this trend, explaining the reasons behind its mixed results and how it has impacted the industry.

The trend gained momentum after films like Tumbbad, Sanam Teri Kasam, and Rockstar achieved significant box office collections during their re-release. Encouraged by this outcome, several producers have attempted to reintroduce older films to audiences. While certain movies like Tumbbad and Sanam Teri Kasam crossed Rs 50 crore in their repeat run, many other re-released films have failed to attract viewers. Despite these mixed results, industry insiders believe re-releases offer a cost-effective way to generate revenue since the production costs are already covered. With minimal marketing expenses and revenue-sharing models between producers and theatres, the earnings from re-releases often translate to direct profit.

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh explained that the re-release trend has gained traction because of the current void in Bollywood’s release schedule. With a limited number of new films hitting the big screen, producers are seizing the opportunity to revive older films. While some movies have capitalized on audience nostalgia, others have not enjoyed the same success. According to Taran, not every re-released film can achieve blockbuster status. For instance, while Sanam Teri Kasam became a hit post-re-release despite failing during its initial run, other major films with strong star casts have not fared as well. Trade expert Ramesh Bala emphasized that the limited pipeline of new Bollywood releases is a key factor driving the trend. With relatively few new titles performing well in recent months, cinemas are opting to fill screens with re-releases to maintain footfall. Multiplexes with several screens often dedicate one or two screens to old classics while featuring newer Bollywood and Hollywood films on the remaining screens. Ramesh noted that many producers expect modest returns from re-releases, aiming to earn at least Rs 10-20 crore.

While some believe re-releases are a smart marketing strategy, Taran Adarsh highlighted that financial motives remain the primary reason behind the trend. Producers are looking to capitalize on audience nostalgia, especially when past films have shown renewed popularity. He pointed out that while Tumbbad initially struggled at the box office, its re-release transformed it into a success, proving that some films gain cult status over time. Similarly, Sanam Teri Kasam, once considered a commercial failure, found new life through its repeat run, changing its status from a flop to a hit.

Reflecting on Bollywood's history, Taran noted that re-releases were a common and profitable strategy in earlier decades. In the 70s and 80s, repeat screenings of films starring Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Vinod Khanna, and Shashi Kapoor were often box office hits, even when new releases were abundant. However, today's audience is far more selective, making success in re-releases less predictable. While older films like Karan Arjun and Padmaavat failed to make a mark during their re-release, unexpected hits like Tumbbad and Sanam Teri Kasam have demonstrated the potential of this strategy.

Ramesh Bala believes this trend will continue until Bollywood sees a consistent flow of new releases. He pointed out that Bollywood thrives on big-banner films featuring popular stars like Ajay Devgn and Akshay Kumar, which historically draw crowds. Without a steady stream of such releases, theatres may continue turning to re-releases to sustain their business. However, Ramesh also warned that over-reliance on old content could impact the performance of newer releases, especially those without major star power. As the trend continues, Bollywood producers must balance re-releases with fresh content to maintain audience engagement. While re-releases may offer short-term financial gains, the industry’s long-term success will rely on delivering new, compelling stories that resonate with modern audiences. Films like Pushpa 2: The Rule and Chhaava have already proven that audiences are eager for fresh narratives, and Bollywood’s challenge lies in meeting this demand while creatively leveraging nostalgia-driven re-releases.
