As the excitement builds for the May 30 release of Karate Kid: Legends, iconic action stars Jackie Chan and Ajay Devgn sat down to discuss legacy, the evolving world of action cinema, and the possibility of a Bollywood crossover. In the latest installment of the beloved franchise, Jackie Chan returns as Mr. Han, now guiding his nephew Li Fong, portrayed by rising star Ben Wang. Meanwhile, in the Hindi dub, Ajay Devgn lends his voice to Mr. Han, with his son Yug making his voice-over debut as Li Fong—marking their first professional collaboration.
Ajay reflected on his own journey into films, calling his father, legendary stunt choreographer Veeru Devgan, his “real-life Mr. Miyagi.” He remarked, “It was his dream for me to become an actor.” Jackie echoed the sentiment, mentioning the many teachers who shaped his journey. Ben Wang also expressed gratitude for his mentors, while Yug acknowledged his father as his biggest inspiration and guiding force.
When the conversation turned to action, Ajay noted the stark difference between past and present filmmaking techniques. “Things are much easier now. Earlier, we had no graphics or cables just raw effort. Work hard, that’s how you succeed,” he advised young actors. Jackie shared a lighter moment, reminiscing about his experience shooting Kung Fu Yoga in India. “Every time I watch a Bollywood film, I’m amazed. Everyone knows how to dance the rhythm, the energy, the choreography it’s fantastic,” he said, joking that he once told his director he wanted to be part of just a Bollywood dance sequence.
Both stars drew a connection between dance and action, emphasizing the shared need for rhythm, timing, and expressive movement. As Jackie expressed admiration for Indian cinema and Ajay hinted at future collaborations, fans can’t help but wonder could a full-fledged Bollywood crossover featuring these two legends be next? Only time will tell, but Karate Kid: Legends certainly sets the stage for something bigger.
