Mel Brooks Returns as Yogurt in 2027 ‘Spaceballs’ Sequel
Comedy icon Mel Brooks is officially returning to the big screen, reprising his beloved role as Yogurt in the upcoming Spaceballs sequel. Backed by Amazon MGM Studios and set for a 2027 release, the project comes just in time for Brooks’ 99th birthday, signaling a remarkable comeback for the Hollywood legend.
The original Spaceballs, a 1987 sci-fi parody of Star Wars and other space epics, has long held cult status thanks to its irreverent humor and genre-spoofing brilliance. Brooks played both Yogurt a comical twist on Yoda and President Skroob, the film’s absurd galactic leader. While Spaceballs didn’t initially dominate the box office, it gained a massive following over the decades through home media and repeated airings.
As confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter, the new untitled sequel will be directed by Josh Greenbaum (Strays), with the screenplay penned by Josh Gad, Dan Hernandez, and Benji Samit. While additional casting has not yet been announced, Mel Brooks’ return alone has fans buzzing.
The sequel will be produced by Brooks himself, along with Josh Gad, Josh Greenbaum, and Imagine Entertainment’s Brian Grazer and Jeb Brody. Executive producers include Kevin Slater, Adam Merims, Samit, and Hernandez.
Brooks’ last on-screen film role dates back to 2005’s The Producers, though he’s remained active with voice work and as a cultural icon. Known for groundbreaking comedies like Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, and High Anxiety, Brooks is also one of the rare EGOT winners having secured an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony across his career.
While it’s not yet clear if original cast members like Bill Pullman or Rick Moranis will return, the sequel’s announcement has already reignited interest in Spaceballs’ signature brand of comedy. Fans can expect more galactic gags, legendary parody, and classic Mel Brooks humor when the film hits theaters in 2027.
