Eric Dane Opens Up About ALS Battle, Losing Mobility
Actor Eric Dane has publicly revealed the emotional and physical toll of battling Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), a rare and degenerative neurological disease. Best known for his iconic roles in Grey’s Anatomy and Euphoria, the 52-year-old actor broke his silence in a heart-wrenching interview with Diane Sawyer on Good Morning America, where he disclosed that his right arm has completely stopped functioning and his left side is weakening rapidly.
Eric first noticed symptoms nearly 18 months ago, describing early signs as hand fatigue, something he initially dismissed. But as his condition worsened, he consulted multiple specialists before being diagnosed with ALS in April 2025. “My left side is functioning, my right side has completely stopped working,” he said, visibly emotional. “In a few more months, I may not have use of my left hand either. It’s sobering.”
ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, leads to gradual muscle paralysis, affecting movement, speech, and eventually breathing. While there is no cure, patients often have a life expectancy of three to five years post-diagnosis, though some live longer.
Dane credited his wife, actress Rebecca Gayheart, for her unwavering support. “She is probably my biggest champion and my most stalwart supporter,” he said, tearing up. The couple, who share two daughters, have grown closer despite the challenges, becoming “better friends and better parents” through the process.
He recounted a heartbreaking moment during a snorkeling trip when his daughter had to drag him back to the boat. “I broke down in tears,” he said. “But I made sure she got back in the water with her friend. I didn’t want to take that away from her.”
Despite the emotional and physical strain, Dane is determined to keep working. He will return as Cal Jacobs in Euphoria Season 3 and is also set to star in Countdown, an upcoming series premiering on Prime Video on June 25. “In my heart, I don’t feel like this is the end for me,” he stated. “I’m fighting as much as I can. There’s so much about it that’s out of my control.”
Eric Dane also expressed his deep sadness about potentially leaving his daughters too early, reflecting on the pain of losing his own father when he was just seven. “I’m angry because now there’s a real possibility I’ll be taken from my girls while they’re still young,” he said. Dane’s courageous openness has sparked an outpouring of support from fans and peers, shedding light on the struggles faced by those living with ALS, while showing his continued resilience both on and off screen.
