Muzaffar Ali Says Umrao Jaan Can’t Be Recreated

Filmmaker Muzaffar Ali has ruled out the possibility of remaking his timeless 1981 classic Umrao Jaan, even as the restored version of the film is set to return to theatres on June 27. In a recent interview, Ali explained that no remake could match the original, which was driven by deep commitment, passion, and the rare brilliance of its cast and crew.

Based on Mirza Hadi Ruswa’s novel, Umrao Jaan featured Rekha in one of her most iconic roles, earning her the National Award for Best Actress. Speaking about Rekha’s unmatched performance, Ali said, “Rekha is not easy to find. You don’t find people with such commitment what she did, no one else can do today.”

Ali emphasized that the magic of the original film was the result of a layered, collective artistry from Shahryar’s poetry and Khayyam’s soulful compositions to Kumudini Lakhia’s choreography and Asha Bhosle’s timeless voice. “Every person in the film was as real as Rekha, and she, too, became part of that milieu,” Ali said, adding that films aren’t just built on big budgets, but on an emotional investment that’s hard to replicate.

He also referenced the 2006 remake starring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, which failed to capture the essence of the original despite its high-profile cast. Without naming it directly, Ali acknowledged that such attempts only reinforced his belief that the story was best left untouched. “It can’t be recreated. Others have tried and failed, so why should I?” he stated.

Ali further shared that the re-release will coincide with the launch of his coffee table book featuring archival images and written pieces, including contributions from Rekha and Naseeruddin Shah. The film has been restored in 4K resolution by the National Film Archive of India (NFAI) and the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC), and will be screened under the Curated Shows banner by PVR Inox.

Umrao Jaan also starred Farooq Shaikh, Naseeruddin Shah, Shaukat Kaifi, Dina Pathak, and several other legendary performers. With the upcoming re-release, fans old and new will get a chance to revisit this cinematic gem in a format that does justice to its rich legacy.
