Pawan Kalyan Slams Bollywood for Losing Cultural Roots
In a recent interview, Telugu superstar and Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan expressed concern over Bollywood's gradual disconnect from Indian cultural roots. Speaking with Organiser Weekly, the actor-politician remarked that Bollywood has prioritized commercial success over cultural integrity, losing touch with the traditional ethos that once defined Hindi cinema.
Pawan Kalyan highlighted that, with globalisation influencing new generations of filmmakers, the portrayal of culturally rooted characters in Bollywood has often bordered on mockery. “Characters with a tilak or traditional values are often shown with buffoonery,” he observed. He further said that he prefers the term Bharatiya Chitraparishrama over Indian Cinema to emphasize cultural identity and authenticity.
He praised South Indian films for staying connected to Indian culture, citing Aamir Khan’s Dangal as a rare example from Bollywood that showcased authentic Indian values and rural representation. He explained that South filmmakers often target rural audiences, who make up 70–80% of their market, and thus maintain a stronger connection to traditional Indian life.
Pawan Kalyan, known for his dynamic roles and political voice, has a busy slate ahead. His upcoming historical epic Hari Hara Veera Mallu releases on July 24, followed by They Call Him OG on September 25. He is currently filming Ustaad Bhagat Singh, continuing to blend stardom with strong cultural narratives.
