Akshay Kumar Chose Haiwaan After Actors Rejected Role: Priyadarshan

Priyadarshan revealed how Akshay Kumar volunteered to play the lead role in Haiwaan. The filmmaker said several actors had rejected the character before Akshay expressed his desire to portray a calm and polished psychopath.

Director Priyadarshan has revealed the unexpected story behind Akshay Kumar’s casting in Haiwaan, saying the Bollywood star personally volunteered for the central role after learning that several other actors had turned it down. The filmmaker said Akshay had long wanted to portray a psychologically complex and dangerous character, making the project an opportunity he was eager to pursue.

According to Priyadarshan, Akshay was not initially considered for the part. The conversation reportedly took place while the actor and director were working together on Bhoot Bangla. During a break between shots, Priyadarshan casually mentioned that he had an interesting character for another film but was struggling to find an actor willing to take it on.

Akshay Kumar volunteered for Haiwaan during Bhoot Bangla shoot

Priyadarshan said he had approached several performers before discussing the project with Akshay, but none agreed to join the film. Some actors reportedly wanted to reshape the character and suggest their own versions of the screenplay, which did not match the director’s original vision.

The filmmaker eventually considered abandoning the casting search. However, after completing a shot for Bhoot Bangla, Akshay returned to Priyadarshan and asked whether he could play the role. The director was initially surprised because he had never imagined Akshay as the character.

Akshay reportedly explained that he had always wanted to portray a “psycho” character. His enthusiasm changed the direction of the project and effectively made him the person who pitched himself for Haiwaan. Priyadarshan did not disclose the identities of the actors who had rejected the role, saying it would be unfair to name them publicly.

Haiwaan character required a calm and polished performance

Priyadarshan wanted Akshay to avoid presenting the character as visibly sinister or aggressively unstable. Instead, he instructed the actor to remain as calm, pleasant and controlled as possible. The director’s intention was to create someone whose dangerous personality remains hidden beneath a polished exterior.

The filmmaker explained that psychologically disturbing characters can appear ordinary, charming and sophisticated, preventing others from immediately recognizing the threat beneath the surface. That contrast became central to Akshay’s performance in Haiwaan.

Priyadarshan said Akshay quickly understood the direction and delivered the character in the required manner. Their established working relationship reportedly made the process easier, as the actor trusted the filmmaker’s interpretation and did not need lengthy explanations before performing a scene.

Priyadarshan and Akshay Kumar share strong creative trust

Akshay and Priyadarshan have collaborated on several successful films over the years, building one of Hindi cinema’s most familiar actor-director partnerships. Priyadarshan said their long association has created a level of confidence that allows them to work efficiently on set.

According to the director, Akshay generally arrives when a shot is ready, asks what is required and follows the instructions without unnecessary questions. Priyadarshan believes this trust helped the actor understand Haiwaan’s difficult character and adopt a performance that was quieter and more deceptive than a conventional screen villain.

Their previous collaborations have largely been associated with comedy and commercial entertainment. Haiwaan, however, offers Akshay an opportunity to explore a darker psychological space while still relying on the creative understanding he has developed with Priyadarshan.

Haiwaan places screenplay and character above star image

Priyadarshan also emphasized that a powerful screenplay remains essential, regardless of an actor’s talent or popularity. He recalled Amitabh Bachchan’s observation that performers ultimately depend on the roles written for them, because even the strongest acting cannot fully compensate for a weak script.

The filmmaker said a well-developed screenplay gives actors the foundation required to deliver memorable performances. His comments suggest that Haiwaan will focus on character construction and psychological tension rather than depending only on Akshay’s established star image.

The revelation surrounding Akshay’s casting has increased curiosity about the film, particularly because the actor actively sought the role instead of being the director’s first choice. His transformation into a composed yet potentially dangerous character could become one of Haiwaan’s biggest talking points as audiences await more details about the thriller.
