In a time when multi-star films often rely on face-offs between big names to generate hype, director Nitesh Tiwari’s upcoming Ramayana is taking a bold and faithful turn by minimizing shared screen time between its two lead stars Ranbir Kapoor, who plays Lord Ram, and Yash, who portrays the mighty Raavan. Backed by producer Namit Malhotra, this mythological epic is being made on a grand scale and is one of the most awaited films in Indian cinema.
Sources close to the production reveal that the decision is not due to creative conflicts or scheduling issues alone, but rather a narrative choice rooted in the original Valmiki Ramayan. According to the ancient text, Ram and Raavan exist in separate worlds for most of the story, with their paths only crossing after Sita’s abduction and culminating in their final battle in Lanka. This approach preserves the emotional tension and builds anticipation for their ultimate confrontation making it a more powerful cinematic moment.
Ranbir Kapoor, who has already completed his portions for Ramayana, will reportedly not appear alongside Yash in most of the film’s key scenes. On the other hand, Yash, who started filming in May after a spiritual visit to the Mahakal Temple in Ujjain, will be sharing screen space primarily with Sai Pallavi, who plays Sita, and Sunny Deol, cast as Hanuman. This narrative structure allows the characters of Ram and Raavan to develop independently and with depth one embodying dharma, virtue, and restraint, and the other driven by ego, power, and desire. Their journeys evolve in parallel, each carrying emotional weight, which will heighten the impact when their paths finally collide in the climactic battle.
Apart from the creative rationale, there are also logistical reasons. Ranbir is currently committed to Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Love & War, which requires him to maintain a specific appearance, limiting his flexibility to shoot overlapping roles. Combined with production delays, this made it unfeasible to sync schedules for overlapping scenes between him and Yash.
Ramayana is being crafted as a two-part cinematic epic, with the first installment releasing in Diwali 2026 and the second during Diwali 2027. The production is currently underway on massive, detailed sets that reflect the film's commitment to authenticity and scale. With a top-tier VFX team, immersive design, and a star-studded ensemble, the film is expected to set a new benchmark for mythological storytelling in Indian cinema.
In a cinematic landscape filled with spectacle, Ramayana aims to balance reverence for the source material with high production value, creating a rich, emotionally layered retelling of India’s most sacred epic. The decision to withhold the direct interaction between Ram and Raavan until the finale reinforces the storytelling purity and thematic tension. With Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Ram, Yash as Raavan, Sai Pallavi as Sita, and Sunny Deol as Hanuman, the film is poised to be a massive theatrical experience that doesn’t rely on overexposed star interactions but on strong narrative progression and spiritual gravitas.
