Aamir Khan has finally broken his silence on what went wrong with the much-anticipated but critically mixed Dhoom 3. Over a decade after its 2013 release, the Bollywood superstar shared his thoughts during a candid conversation with Mashable, reflecting on a key script decision that, in his view, weakened the film's emotional arc.
Aamir revealed that the original script included the return of Rimi Sen’s character, Sweety Dixit, the wife of Abhishek Bachchan’s character Jai Dixit, from the first two Dhoom films. “Dhoom 3 behtar ho sakti thi,” Khan admitted, adding that removing Sweety from the storyline was, in his opinion, a misstep.
According to Khan, the original narrative opened with Sweety seeking a divorce due to Jai’s constant neglect—missing birthdays, festivals like Karva Chauth, and important personal moments. This would have added emotional weight to Jai’s character, highlighting the conflict between personal life and professional duty.
Khan elaborated that Abhishek’s character was originally supposed to make amends by planning a long-overdue honeymoon. However, just as things seemed to be healing, Jai would get summoned to handle a high-stakes case in Chicago. In a particularly cinematic moment, he would be briefed by the commissioner in a washroom as he prepared to leave for the honeymoon symbolizing the never-ending tug-of-war between love and duty.
Unfortunately, director Vijay Krishna Acharya (Victor) and producer Aditya Chopra dropped the subplot entirely. “Adi aur Victor ko laga woh zaruri nahi hai, toh unhone nikaal diya. Mere hisaab se woh galti thi,” Khan reflected. The removal of this subplot, according to Aamir, left the character emotionally underdeveloped and limited the film’s ability to connect with the audience. Despite its commercial success, Dhoom 3 received criticism for focusing heavily on action and spectacle while lacking emotional depth. Khan’s recent remarks shine a light on the behind-the-scenes decisions that shaped the final product.
Dhoom 3, which starred Katrina Kaif alongside Aamir Khan in a dual role, also featured Abhishek Bachchan, Uday Chopra, Jackie Shroff, and Siddharth Nigam. It remains one of the most technically ambitious films in the franchise but also one of the most debated in terms of storytelling.
