Low-Budget Thrillers Shine While Star Movies Struggle in Tamil Cinema

In recent times, thrillers have taken a dominant position in the Indian film industry, particularly in Tamil cinema, as audiences increasingly lean towards this genre, especially with the growing influence of OTT platforms. Unlike the traditional preference for star-studded hero films, many low-budget thrillers are receiving more positive responses. This shift has been evident in recent releases, where small films have managed to outshine big-budget productions in terms of audience engagement.

A prime example of this trend is Vijay Anthony's Maargan, which was released with minimal buzz. Despite this, the film’s thrilling narrative and crisp runtime helped it gain momentum during evening shows on its release day, eventually earning decent collections in Tamil and Telugu by the end of the first weekend. The film's unexpected success reflects the growing appetite for thrilling content.

Similarly, Eleven, starring Naveen Chandra, though not a box-office hit, has gained immense popularity after its OTT release. Viewers have hailed it as one of the finest thrillers in recent times. The film’s success on OTT highlights the potential for low-budget films to succeed when given proper promotion. Critics believe that better marketing could have helped Eleven perform better in theaters.

This rising trend in Tamil cinema reflects a shift in audience preference, where thrillers like Maargan, Eleven, Ten Hours, and DNA have been received more positively than star-driven movies. Films like Retro, Thug Life, and Vidaamuyarchi were outright rejected by audiences, showing a clear disinterest in high-budget films with big stars. On the other hand, smaller thrillers, often based on real incidents and made on low budgets, have been well-received.

As the number of thriller projects in Kollywood continues to rise, with reportedly around 20 such films currently in production, it remains to be seen how long this trend will continue to captivate audiences. The growing popularity of these films proves that quality storytelling and compelling narratives can trump star power, especially in today’s OTT-driven movie landscape.
