Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey Breaks Record as IMAX Tickets Vanish a Year Before Release
In a cinematic event rarely witnessed, tickets for Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film The Odyssey sold out within an hour of release despite the film being scheduled for July 2026. Shot entirely on IMAX 70mm cameras, this Greek mythology-inspired epic marks a first for commercial cinema and continues Nolan's tradition of redefining the big-screen experience.
The initial ticket drop, announced via IMAX’s official social channels at midnight Eastern Time, caused a stampede for premium seats. Within 60 minutes, nearly all available IMAX 70mm showings across the United States, Canada, the UK, Australia, and parts of Europe were fully booked. Special preview screenings on July 16, ahead of its July 17-19 release, also saw unprecedented demand.
Massive Star Cast and Record Budget Fuel Hype
Following the success of Oppenheimer, which grossed over $975 million globally, The Odyssey is poised to surpass expectations with a $250 million production budget the highest of Nolan’s career. The cast includes Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Jon Bernthal, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, and Mia Goth, promising a performance-packed experience.
The story, a retelling of Homer’s epic poem, follows the journey of Odysseus through mythical lands and trials on his way back to Ithaca. With visuals shot entirely on IMAX cameras and an early teaser premiered alongside Jurassic World: Rebirth, the anticipation is only rising. As global audiences rush to claim their seats a year in advance, The Odyssey is setting the stage for one of the most awaited movie events of 2026.
