Netflix Removes Ajith Kumar’s Good Bad Ugly After Ilaiyaraaja Copyright Case

Ajith Kumar’s much awaited Tamil film Good Bad Ugly has run into major trouble after being removed from Netflix. The movie, directed by Adhik Ravichandran and produced by Mythri Movie Makers, released in theatres on April 10, 2025, and premiered on Netflix on May 8. However, the streaming run has been cut short due to a legal battle involving legendary composer Ilaiyaraaja. The composer filed a case claiming that three of his iconic songs, including Ottha Ruba Tharen, En Jodi Manja Kuruvi and Ilamai Idho Idho, were used in the film without his permission. He initially demanded compensation of Rs 5 crore and an apology, but later approached the Madras High Court when the producers allegedly failed to provide proof of authorization.

Justice N Senthilkumar of the Madras High Court issued an interim order barring the producers from screening, distributing or streaming Good Bad Ugly on any platform until the case is resolved. This means that the film has been taken down from Netflix India, leaving fans disappointed. The incident highlights the growing challenges faced by filmmakers and streaming platforms over copyright and intellectual property disputes. Even after theatrical releases and digital premieres, films can face sudden removal if proper legal clearances are not secured. Earlier cases, including the temporary removal of Nani’s V from Amazon Prime Video and controversies involving Netflix documentaries, underline the seriousness of the issue. For now, Good Bad Ugly will remain unavailable until the court delivers a final judgment, keeping viewers and fans waiting for clarity.
