Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz to Reunite for The Mummy Sequel Directed by Radio Silence

Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are reportedly in advanced talks to reunite for a brand-new sequel in The Mummy franchise, a series that defined late 1990s and early 2000s adventure cinema. Universal Pictures has tapped the directing duo Radio Silence—Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett—to helm the project. The team is known for reinvigorating the Scream franchise and delivering the hit thriller Ready or Not. While Universal has not officially confirmed the film, sources reveal it is being positioned as a direct continuation of the original storyline rather than a reboot. The studio aims to recapture the excitement and nostalgia that made the earlier films box office sensations.

The decision to bring back Fraser and Weisz signals a strategic revival of one of Universal’s most iconic franchises. The Mummy trilogy, which began in 1999 and concluded with The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor in 2008, grossed over $422.5 million globally. Fraser portrayed the adventurous Rick O’Connell, while Weisz starred as Evelyn Carnahan in the first two films before being replaced by Maria Bello in the third. According to The Hollywood Reporter, this new installment may ignore the events of the third movie and pick up from the more beloved parts of the series. Producer Sean Daniel, who worked on the original trilogy, will return alongside William Sherak, James Vanderbilt, and Paul Neinstein of Project X Entertainment, ensuring a blend of experience and fresh creative energy.

The return of Brendan Fraser, fresh from his Oscar-winning performance in The Whale, marks another milestone in his career resurgence. Universal reportedly began talks with him about returning to The Mummy franchise during his awards season success. Fraser’s upcoming film, Rental Family, has also been generating positive attention. Meanwhile, Rachel Weisz continues to build a strong portfolio with acclaimed roles in Dead Ringers and Marvel’s Black Widow. The film’s screenplay will be written by David Coggeshall, known for his gripping storytelling in suspense and horror. With Radio Silence at the helm, fans can expect a thrilling fusion of supernatural adventure, emotional character arcs, and cinematic nostalgia. Although details about the plot and supporting cast remain under wraps, Universal’s revival of The Mummy signals a grand return of ancient curses, desert expeditions, and blockbuster spectacle to the big screen.
