Nintendo, Illumination and Universal have unveiled the much-anticipated trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie during a Nintendo Direct showcase, giving fans a spectacular first look at Mario’s next big-screen adventure. Scheduled for release in April 2026, the sequel expands the cinematic universe with a vibrant intergalactic storyline inspired by the beloved 2007 Nintendo Wii game. The trailer opens with a humorous reunion as Mario and Luigi tease a pint-sized Bowser, still shrunken after consuming a Mini Mushroom in the 2023 film. After Bowser attempts a desperate romantic gesture toward Peach and fails miserably, the story launches into a colorful cosmic journey that reimagines some of the game’s most iconic galaxies.
A major highlight of the trailer is the introduction of Rosalina, voiced by Brie Larson, whose celestial presence adds depth and mystery to the sequel. She guides Mario, Peach, Luigi and Toad into the stars as dozens of shooting stars streak across the night sky. The film showcases multiple new planets, including a vast water world and a desert landscape featuring upside-down pyramids taken from Super Mario Odyssey. The action sequences mirror gameplay mechanics, capturing gravity-defying jumps, high-speed bike rides and cosmic battles. Bowser Jr., voiced by Benny Safdie, also steps into the spotlight, armed with a magical paintbrush reminiscent of Super Mario Sunshine, allowing him to coat himself in metal and unleash destructive attacks.
The sequel continues the momentum of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which grossed an astounding $1.3 billion globally and became one of the highest-grossing animated films of all time. Returning stars Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Jack Black as Bowser, Charlie Day as Luigi and Keegan-Michael Key as Toad add familiarity and charm to the expanding universe. Directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, along with writer Matthew Fogel, are back to shape a story that blends nostalgia with fresh interstellar challenges. The film pays homage to classic Mario titles while introducing new threats, including mechanical monsters and cosmic traps that push Mario and his friends to their limits. With its ambitious world-building, stunning animation and beloved characters, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie sets the stage for one of the biggest animated releases of 2026, promising a thrilling adventure for gamers and movie lovers alike.
