Varanasi Movie Title Dispute: Rajamouli, Mahesh Babu and Priyanka Chopra Film Faces Fresh Trouble
The upcoming film Varanasi, directed by SS Rajamouli and starring Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra and Prithviraj Sukumaran, has run into a major dispute over title ownership. Soon after the grand announcement event held at Ramoji Film City on November 15, questions began to emerge regarding who actually owns the title. Rajamouli’s team used the spelling Varanasi during the launch, but the title Vaaranasi has already been in possession of Rama Bramha Hanuma Creations, owned by CH Subba Reddy.
According to documents with the Telugu Film Producer’s Council, the title was originally registered by Subba Reddy in 2023 and renewed from June 24, 2025 to July 23, 2026. Although the spelling used by Rajamouli differs slightly, industry observers point out that similar spellings often fall under the same dispute zone. It remains unclear whether Subba Reddy has filed a formal complaint, but the confusion has triggered a debate within the Telugu film industry about the rightful title-holder.
The matter could escalate if both parties stand firm on their claims. If Subba Reddy raises an official objection, the film council may open an inquiry to determine ownership rights. Rajamouli and his producer-son SS Karthikeya may need to initiate discussions with Subba Reddy to prevent delays in production, especially given the scale and expectations around the film.
Rajamouli is also facing backlash for alleged remarks made about Lord Hanuman at the Varanasi launch event. Groups such as Vanarasena and Gow Rakshak Sangh have submitted complaints accusing him of hurting religious sentiments. With legal and public pressures intensifying simultaneously, the film has gained nationwide attention even before filming moves into full swing. Varanasi is planned for a multilingual summer 2027 release, and despite the controversies, excitement around this major collaboration between Rajamouli, Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra and Prithviraj Sukumaran continues to build.
