Zootopia 2 has taken the global box office by storm, leaving Indian movie lovers stunned with its exceptional performance, especially in the Chinese market. While Indian audiences are known for welcoming movies from every corner of the world, the Chinese audience generally shows limited interest in foreign releases. Yet, this Hollywood animated sequel has turned the tide by delivering historic numbers. The film has collected over 925 crore gross in a single day in China, an extraordinary achievement for any movie, let alone an animated one.
Globally, Zootopia 2 registered an explosive start with $556 million in its opening weekend. Made with an estimated budget of $150 million, it now holds the title of the highest-budget animated film ever produced. It has also secured the biggest opening weekend of all time for a Hollywood film in China, surpassing multiple long-standing records. In just four days, the film has already crossed the $200 million milestone, making it one of the fastest-grossing Hollywood films in the Chinese market.
Trade experts are surprised that an animated movie is outperforming traditional live-action blockbusters in both reach and revenue. Typically, animated films attract a narrower demographic, and Chinese audiences have not been particularly receptive to them in the past. However, Zootopia 2 is rewriting the pattern by drawing massive crowds and redefining audience preferences. The storyline follows detectives Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde as they pursue a mysterious reptile who threatens the harmony of Zootopia. Their investigation takes them into unexplored corners of the city as they work together to crack the case and protect their world.
The unprecedented success of Zootopia 2 has sparked new debates in global film circles. Analysts believe that such a large-scale response to an animated film in China could reshape release strategies for future Hollywood projects. As the movie continues to dominate global markets, all eyes are on how far this record-smashing run will go and whether it will inspire more high-budget animated ventures to target Asian territories.
