Dhurandhar has rewritten Indian box office history by entering the prestigious Rs 1000-crore club within just 21 days of its theatrical release. Directed by Aditya Dhar and headlined by Ranveer Singh, the spy thriller has far exceeded industry expectations and officially become the highest-grossing Indian film of 2025. Released on December 5, the film’s extraordinary run has surprised trade analysts and reignited excitement across the Hindi film industry.
Unlike most big-ticket releases, Dhurandhar followed a restrained promotional strategy before release. The makers relied more on strong content, audience engagement, and critical appreciation rather than excessive marketing. This approach proved successful as word of mouth grew rapidly after the first weekend, resulting in consistent footfalls across multiplexes and single screens alike. Ranveer Singh’s intense portrayal of a spy has been widely appreciated, with audiences praising both his performance and the film’s gripping narrative.
The Rs 1000-crore benchmark was first achieved in 2017 by Baahubali 2: The Conclusion, directed by S. S. Rajamouli, which collected Rs 1,788 crore worldwide. Soon after, Dangal, starring Aamir Khan and directed by Nitesh Tiwari, surpassed it following its China release. Dangal went on to collect Rs 2,070 crore globally, making it the highest-grossing Indian film of all time. The milestone continued to attract ambitious filmmakers. In 2022, Rajamouli returned with RRR, which earned Rs 1,230 crore worldwide. Shortly after, KGF: Chapter 2, directed by Prashanth Neel, entered the elite club with Rs 1,215 crore in collections. The year 2023 saw further additions to the list. Jawan, directed by Atlee, grossed Rs 1,160 crore worldwide, while Pathaan, directed by Siddharth Anand, followed closely with Rs 1,055 crore.
Dhurandhar has provided Hindi cinema with a powerful year-end boost, becoming only the second Hindi film after Chhaava to dominate both box office numbers and public conversation in 2025. While Chhaava set the pace earlier in the year, Dhurandhar delivered a spectacular finish, restoring confidence in content-driven big-budget films.
The film’s success also highlights the growing strength of the spy thriller genre in India. By achieving record-breaking numbers without relying heavily on pre-release hype, Dhurandhar has set a new benchmark for future blockbuster strategies. With collections still holding strong, the film is expected to remain a key reference point in industry discussions for weeks to come, marking a defining moment for Hindi cinema’s global box office presence.
