Thaai Kizhavi Surpasses Rs 50 Crore Mark, Radikaa Sarathkumar’s Film Shatters Industry Norms
Thaai Kizhavi, a Tamil comedy-drama led by 63-year-old actress Radikaa Sarathkumar, has achieved an impressive global box office milestone by crossing Rs 50 crore in earnings. Directed by debutant Sivakumar Murugesan, the film has made waves in the industry for breaking conventional norms, particularly by thriving without the support of a male star. This feat is notable given the Tamil film industry's ongoing struggle for a significant hit since the start of the year.
The film’s plot revolves around a septuagenarian moneylender, Pavunuthaayi, played by Radikaa Sarathkumar, who is bedridden while her three sons fight over her wealth. This unique narrative set in a rural backdrop, combined with strong performances, helped propel the film’s success.
Upon its release on February 27, Thaai Kizhavi opened with an India nett (gross minus taxes) collection of Rs 2.65 crore. Its earnings soared over the opening weekend with Rs 5 crore on Saturday and Rs 6.15 crore on Sunday. The film showed remarkable consistency, maintaining earnings above Rs 1.7 crore during the weekdays.
As of March 7, the film's domestic earnings reached Rs 36.58 crore, contributing to a worldwide gross total of more than Rs 51 crore. The film's commercial success, despite not featuring a traditional male lead, is a breakthrough for Tamil cinema and a strong signal for films driven by female power.
Radikaa Sarathkumar, in a comment on the film’s success, highlighted that the box office earnings would have been higher had ticket prices been raised to Rs 1,000 or Rs 1,500, a pricing often seen for male-led films. She praised the film for maintaining reasonable ticket prices at Rs 150, which allowed it to achieve significant success without overburdening the audience.
The positive reception from critics and audiences alike, who have lauded its engaging narrative and performances, played a vital role in Thaai Kizhavi’s triumph. The film also features a talented ensemble cast, including Singam Puli, Arul Doss, Bala Saravanan, Munishkanth, Ilavarasu, George Maryan, Muthukumar, and Raichal Rabecca. The film’s production team consists of music director Nivas K Prasanna, cinematographer Vivek Vijayakumar, and editor San Lokesh.
In an industry where male stars often dominate box office figures, Thaai Kizhavi’s achievement is a noteworthy milestone, reinforcing that films driven by strong female leads can indeed succeed commercially. This success provides a much-needed boost to the Tamil film industry and sets a precedent for more diverse storytelling in the future.
