BAFTA Winner Boong Becomes First Manipuri Film to Cross Rs 1 Crore at the Box Office

Boong, the BAFTA-winning Manipuri film directed by Lakshmipriya Devi, has made history by becoming the first film of its kind to cross Rs 1 crore at the domestic box office. Released on March 6, 2026, the film has garnered significant attention for its strong performance and critical acclaim. Co-produced by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani's Excel Entertainment, along with Chalkboard Entertainment and Suitable Pictures, Boong's achievement marks a milestone for regional cinema in India.

The film, which won the Best Children's and Family Film award at the 2026 BAFTA ceremony, was nominated alongside films like Arco, Lilo & Stitch, and Zootropolis 2. This victory adds further prestige to Boong, which has already made waves on the global film festival circuit. It was selected as the Spotlight Film at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne 2025 and received rave reviews for Lakshmipriya Devi’s direction, earning her the Best Director title at the Bulbul Children's International Film Festival in Goa.

Boong had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in 2024 and has since been screened at major festivals like the Warsaw International Film Festival, MAMI Mumbai Film Festival, and the International Film Festival of India. This success is a testament to Devi’s talent and vision, as it marks her first feature-length directorial venture after working as an assistant director on major films like Luck by Chance, Talaash, PK, and A Suitable Boy. With such impressive accolades and box office success, Boong’s impact on both the Manipuri film industry and Indian cinema at large is undeniable.
