Chinmayi Sripada Slams Kamal Haasan & Rajinikanth Over Vairamuthu’s Jnanpith Award

Chinmayi Sripada, known for her powerful voice and outspoken stance on women’s issues, has once again ignited a major controversy in the South Indian film industry. The singer, who has gained prominence not only for her musical talent but also for her unflinching approach to speaking out against women’s atrocities, recently targeted two of Tamil cinema's biggest stars—Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan—over their support for lyricist R. Vairamuthu.

Chinmayi’s remarks came after both Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan publicly praised Vairamuthu upon his receiving the prestigious Jnanpith Award. The Jnanpith Award, India's highest literary honor, was presented to Vairamuthu for his contributions to Tamil literature. However, for Chinmayi, the honor of this recognition has a much deeper personal significance, as she has previously accused Vairamuthu of sexual misconduct during the #MeToo movement in 2018.

In a scathing post on social media platform X, Chinmayi took aim at both Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan, questioning their support for Vairamuthu. She wrote: “End of the day, men WILL stand by their bros, uncles, dads, friends, mentors. Who cares if multiple women were traumatised?” This remark struck a chord among many followers, as it directly challenged the apparent indifference to the sexual harassment allegations against Vairamuthu, which she and several other women had brought to light.

The controversy has its roots in the allegations Chinmayi leveled against Vairamuthu, who, according to her, was one of the men who had allegedly abused women within the Tamil film industry. Chinmayi’s accusations, which were part of the larger #MeToo movement that shook the Indian entertainment industry, were met with widespread silence from the industry, something Chinmayi has never forgiven. She further emphasized that the voices of the women who named Vairamuthu were deliberately silenced.

In a series of posts on X, Chinmayi not only criticized Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan but also highlighted the issue of how women’s voices continue to be ignored in such cases. She remarked, “The collective voices of the women who named him were silenced. I paid a very heavy price – the rest of the women who left their dreams behind weren’t half as lucky as I.”

Chinmayi’s anger stems from the fact that those in positions of power, like Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan, have continued to endorse Vairamuthu despite these serious allegations. According to Chinmayi, this sends a troubling message to women, particularly to those who are part of the entertainment industry and who continue to face similar harassment. She expressed her disappointment further by stating that even a member of Kamal Haasan's political party had publicly named Vairamuthu as her abuser, yet the silence from the men in power remained deafening.

Chinmayi’s open criticism has raised eyebrows across the industry and media circles, and her bold comments continue to spark a nationwide debate. The issue of women’s safety, especially in industries like cinema, has come under the spotlight once again, as Chinmayi remains steadfast in her stance, demanding that women’s voices be heard and respected. Her remarks have not only reignited the conversation about sexual misconduct in the film industry but also about the continued power dynamics that keep such abuse unchecked.
