Dhurandhar 2 Controversy: R Madhavan Responds to Backlash Over Gurbani Scene

Dhurandhar 2: The Revenge, directed by Aditya Dhar and starring Ranveer Singh, has been at the center of controversy due to a scene involving R. Madhavan's character, Ajay Sanyal. The controversy erupted after the character was shown reciting a verse from the Dasam Granth, attributed to Guru Gobind Singh, while reportedly smoking a cigarette. The depiction has drawn the ire of the Sikh community, leading to an FIR being filed at Mumbai's Mulund Police Station.

The complaint, lodged by Gurjyot Singh Keer, a Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) leader and president of the Sikhs in Maharashtra organization, names R. Madhavan, Ranveer Singh, and director Aditya Dhar for allegedly hurting religious sentiments. The scene, which was part of the highly anticipated Dhurandhar 2, quickly became a flashpoint for discussions surrounding cultural and religious sensitivities in cinema.

In response to the backlash, R. Madhavan addressed the controversy in a video shared on Instagram. He clarified that the smoking act in the scene was not meant to disrespect any religion or its teachings. Madhavan strongly emphasized that the cigarette was extinguished before the Gurbani lines were delivered, and that there was no visible smoke or cigarette in the frame when the religious verse was recited. He called the backlash a "misunderstanding" and expressed his respect for the Sikh community and their values.

While the controversy continues to swirl, Dhurandhar 2 is enjoying box-office success, but the issue has raised questions about cultural sensitivity in modern filmmaking. The filmmakers and actors are now hoping that the clarification will help ease tensions and redirect the focus back to the movie's performances and content.
