Actor Kajol recently reflected on how dramatically relationships, parenting styles, and youth behaviour have evolved since the release of her iconic film Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. Speaking during an interaction on Shame Less with Lilly Singh, the actor discussed whether a character like Simran could exist in today’s fast-paced Gen Z world. Kajol explained that the social environment depicted in the 1990s classic—where young individuals often sought parental approval for major life decisions—has shifted significantly. Today’s generation, she noted, is far more assertive and independent, often expressing their choices directly rather than asking for permission, reflecting broader changes in family dynamics and communication.
Elaborating on this shift, Kajol highlighted how conversations between parents and children have become more open and less hierarchical. She pointed out that modern teenagers are more likely to present their plans as decisions rather than requests, showing increased confidence and a stronger sense of individuality. This change, she suggested, is a natural outcome of evolving societal norms, access to information, and changing parenting approaches. However, Kajol also acknowledged that this independence comes with its own challenges, particularly in navigating an overload of information and choices, which can sometimes make decision-making more complex for Gen Z compared to earlier generations.
Despite these changes, Kajol emphasized that the emotional core of Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge still holds relevance. She expressed hope that younger audiences continue to value relationships and family bonds, which were central to the film’s story. According to her, while lifestyles and attitudes may evolve, the importance of love, trust, and familial support remains constant. Adding a light-hearted touch, she joked that her character’s fashion choices might not resonate with today’s audience, underlining how trends have changed over time. Kajol’s insights highlight the balance between modern independence and timeless values, showing that while Simran’s world may feel distant, its emotional essence still connects across generations.
