April 28, 2026 | 12:10 IST | Chennai — Jana Nayagan likely to release on May 8 after delays. Vijay’s film faced censor issues and leak, official confirmation still awaited.
Vijay’s much-awaited political action drama Jana Nayagan is now likely to hit theatres worldwide on May 8, following a series of delays that had left fans uncertain about its release. While the makers are yet to officially confirm the date, reports suggest that the issues that previously stalled the film have largely been resolved, bringing it closer to its theatrical debut.
Originally planned for a Pongal 2026 release, the film faced setbacks due to complications with the Central Board of Film Certification, which reportedly delayed its certification process. Despite strong advance bookings said to have crossed Rs 100 crore, the film could not release as scheduled. Although recent updates indicate that the censor hurdles may have been cleared, the certificate has not yet been updated on official portals, raising some uncertainty.
Adding to the complications, the film was recently leaked online in HD quality, a factor that could impact its box office performance. Piracy at this stage typically eats into opening weekend numbers, and assuming Vijay’s star power alone will neutralize that is risky. Still, his strong theatrical pull, combined with the buzz around this being his final film, may offset some of the damage.
Directed by H Vinoth, the film reportedly features Vijay in the role of a former police officer. The ensemble cast includes Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Prakash Raj, Gautham Vasudev Menon, and Mamitha Baiju. Backed by KVN Productions, the film is also strategically positioned after the Tamil Nadu election results on May 4, which could influence audience turnout. At this point, the May 8 release looks probable but not locked. Until there’s an official announcement, treating it as confirmed is premature.
