AMMA leadership steps down after tense meeting
The executive committee of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists, popularly known as AMMA, has resigned following a no-confidence motion at the organisation’s annual general body meeting. Actor Shwetha Menon, who became the first woman president of the Malayalam film body in August 2025, confirmed that the full committee had stepped down after members raised strong objections against the leadership.
The decision came after heated discussions during the meeting, where dissatisfaction over the functioning of the committee reportedly became visible. Several members are said to have supported the no-confidence motion, turning the annual gathering into a major organisational crisis. The resignation has brought an abrupt end to a leadership team that was initially seen as a milestone for representation in Malayalam cinema.
Shwetha Menon’s election as president had created history, while actor Cuckoo Parameswaran’s appointment as general secretary also marked a significant moment for women in the organisation’s top leadership. However, the committee’s tenure soon became complicated by internal disputes, administrative questions and concerns over how office-related complaints were handled.
Accounts and internal disputes deepen crisis
After announcing the resignation, Shwetha Menon said the committee faced difficulties in presenting accounts for a particular period due to issues involving the treasurer and office administration. She claimed that the treasurer was unavailable after a dispute linked to the termination of an AMMA office manager, who later filed a police complaint. According to her, accounts from September 1 onward were in order, but the earlier gap became a point of pressure during the meeting.
The controversy reflects deeper divisions within AMMA, which has faced repeated scrutiny over transparency, workplace concerns and internal governance. What began as a historic leadership change in 2025 has now ended with a collective exit, putting the focus back on the organisation’s structure and accountability.
Reports also said actor Ganesh Kumar spoke in support of the committee during the meeting, while senior actor Mohanlal remained neutral. The mixed responses from members show that the issue was not limited to one office-bearer but had grown into a broader debate over the future direction of the association.
Historic tenure ends with bigger questions
Shwetha Menon’s resignation is significant because her presidency was viewed as a symbolic shift after years of debate around gender representation in Malayalam cinema. Her rise to the top post had brought expectations of reform, better welfare measures and stronger attention to member concerns. The latest development, however, shows that representation alone cannot resolve long-standing organisational problems without stable administration and internal trust.
The exit of the AMMA executive committee is likely to trigger fresh discussions on how the film body should handle accounts, staff complaints, member grievances and leadership transitions. For Malayalam cinema, the controversy has moved beyond one resignation and has become a larger question about governance inside influential industry associations.
With the committee stepping down, AMMA now faces the challenge of restoring confidence among members and setting up a leadership structure that can address both administrative and reputational concerns. The next phase will be closely watched by actors, industry observers and fans of Malayalam cinema.
