Diljit Dosanjh linked his packed Vancouver concert to the historic Komagata Maru incident, highlighting its emotional significance. He called the moment powerful as over 55,000 fans gathered near a site tied to a painful chapter in Indian-Canadian history.
Diljit Dosanjh created a powerful emotional moment after performing to a packed crowd of over 55,000 fans in Vancouver, Canada. Speaking on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon with Jimmy Fallon, he connected the massive turnout to a significant chapter in Indian history — the Komagata Maru incident.
The concert, part of his Aura Tour held at BC Place, took place just a few kilometres away from where the Komagata Maru ship was turned away in 1914. Diljit highlighted the contrast between the past, when Indians were denied entry into Canada, and the present, where tens of thousands gathered to celebrate Punjabi music and culture.
The Komagata Maru incident involved 376 passengers, mostly from Punjab, who were denied entry into Canada despite having valid documents. The ship, chartered by Gurdit Singh, was forced to return to India, where several passengers faced violence and imprisonment. The incident remains a symbol of racial discrimination in immigration history.
By referencing this event, Diljit Dosanjh underlined how far the Indian community in Canada has come. His Vancouver concert became more than just a musical performance — it stood as a reflection of resilience, identity, and progress for the Indian diaspora.
