Lawrence of Punjab Makers Agree to Change Title After High Court Concerns

Lawrence of Punjab Makers Agree to Change Title After High Court Concerns

The makers of the controversial docuseries Lawrence of Punjab, reportedly based on jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, have agreed to change the title following objections raised by the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The series, which sparked debate due to its reference to Bishnoi and the state of Punjab, has been under scrutiny for its potential to glorify gangster culture.

During the court proceedings, Zee Entertainment, which is producing the series, informed the High Court that they were willing to revise the title. The company requested time to finalize a new title, assuring the court that the name "Lawrence Bishnoi" would no longer appear in it. While the court found no objectionable content in the series itself, it acknowledged the concerns raised about the title.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court had reviewed the docuseries and concluded that the content, which appeared to rely heavily on publicly available material and newspaper reports, was not problematic. However, the court emphasized that removing "Lawrence Bishnoi" from the title would resolve the concerns.

Despite this, Punjab's Advocate General argued that the film should remove both "Punjab" and references to Bishnoi altogether, claiming that the film could stir up unrest in the state. Additionally, the counsel for Lawrence Bishnoi requested the removal of the gangster's name and images from the project.

The central government also voiced concerns, citing potential disturbances in law and order in Punjab due to the film's content. The controversy is part of a wider issue, where the High Court had previously intervened to prevent the glorification of gangsters on social media. The court had earlier issued directions to remove posts promoting criminal activities.

The dispute continues to underline the sensitive intersection of media representation, law, and regional identity. The film's title, Lawrence of Punjab, which was allegedly inspired by the classic film Lawrence of Arabia, has been at the heart of the controversy. With the title change imminent, the project now faces the
