Vishal Bhardwaj among Indians invited to join Oscar Academy voters

Vishal Bhardwaj among Indians invited to join Oscar Academy voters

Academy Expands Global Membership List

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has extended invitations to 529 film professionals worldwide for its 2026 membership intake, a move that could allow them to participate in future Oscar voting if they accept. Among the notable Indian invitees are filmmaker and composer Vishal Bhardwaj, known for acclaimed films such as Haider, and costume designer Eka Lakhani, recognized for her work on Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. The list also includes several other Indian film professionals spanning editing, casting, animation, and technical fields, highlighting the growing presence of Indian talent in global cinema circles.

The invitation is considered significant because Academy membership directly grants voting rights for the Oscars across various branches. This year’s cohort includes a large number of previous Oscar nominees and winners, reflecting both experience and global reach. If all invitees accept, total Academy membership will rise to over 11,000 members, further expanding its voting base.

What This Means for Global and Indian Cinema

The 2026 intake reflects the Academy’s continued effort to diversify its membership base, with a reported 42 percent of invitees being women and more than half coming from outside the United States. Officials associated with the Academy stated that the new class represents a wide range of artistic and technical contributions across the global film industry, reinforcing the organization’s push toward broader international inclusion.

For Indian cinema, the inclusion of professionals like Vishal Bhardwaj and Eka Lakhani signals increasing recognition of Indian creative talent within the global awards ecosystem. While the invitation does not automatically confirm membership, acceptance would give these professionals a direct role in shaping future Oscar outcomes, potentially influencing how Indian and international films are evaluated at the world’s most prestigious film awards.
